Rick Rodich
Rick Rodich's interest in lilies stems from a larger fascination for the natural world, so he sees them as part of the whole, rather than a separate entity. Likewise, he is drawn to not just a lily flower, but the entirety of the plant and its life cycle, as well as its interactions with the environment. His degrees in Horticulture and Forestry from the University of Minnesota are a basis for his knowledge of taxonomy and continued learning and understanding of plants and nature.
Rick has grown lilies since his early teens in the 1970s, but only passionately for the last 25 years. His gardens are everchanging to satisfy his goals in learning, as well as his hobby hybridizing and Lilium species trials in his Minnesota zone 4 climate. He is an active member of several plant societies, including the regional North Star Lily Society as well as the North American Lily Society (NALS). Rick speaks on several Lilium subjects as well as other plant topics, and contributes to the NALS virtual education series.
In his presentation Mr. Rodich will talk about "Species for the North". Lilium is a genus of approximately 100+ recognized species, which grow mainly on woodland margins, and can be found naturally through North America, Europe, and Asia south to the Philippines. The flower shapes, color, and diversity have led to obvious, and not so obvious, divisions among the species into subspecies or varieties.
