Barrie Agar
Barrie Agar has worked in horticulture for over 45 years. She initially trained on a large estate in Ireland, in both the market garden and landscaped grounds. She subsequently worked in various gardens and nurseries in Ireland and British Columbia. She recently retired (after 20 years’ service there) from her position of Head Gardener at Hatley Park National Historic Site (surrounding Hatley Castle where Royal Roads University is located) in Victoria, British Columbia. Barrie has a wide range of gardening interests, including Japanese gardens, growing fruit (including in small spaces), Rhododendrons, Garden history and exploration, as well as perennial plants for the garden. She is currently the President of the B.C. Fruit Testers and a member of the Cowichan Valley Rhododendron Society and is on the board of the North American Japanese Garden Society and Coastal Invasive Species Committee.
Ms. Agar has devoted years of service working in the field and falling in and out of love with various plants. In her presentation "Stalwarts in the Perennial Garden - A personal and subjective look at top performers in perennial and mixed gardens", she will present a list of steadfast plants that never sulk, play hard to get, or vanish after the first year in search of a better offer. The definition of perennial in this presentation is loose, including tubers, bulbs, rhizomes, and sub shrubs, as well as the large tribe of herbaceous plants.
